As soon as the biggest enclosed docks on the planet, London’s Royal Docks span round 2.5 miles of waterway alongside the River Thames, encompassing about 250 acres. For design studio Akasaki Vanhuyse, based by Japanese architect Kenta Akasaki and French designer Astrid Vanhuyse, Royal Albert Wharf supplied the proper platform for “FLOAT,” a curvaceous brick bench perched on the quayside.
Working with specialty brickmaker Mishelmersh, the designers tapped into the corporate’s deadstock, plucking 360 items that have been expertly lower into 13 unit sorts with particular angles and dimensions in order that they might be exactly puzzled collectively into the ultimate form. The form of the seat nods to the recognizable ring form of the life preservers dotting the river’s edge, and customers can sit across the perimeter or sink into the center as if in an inside tube. “By connecting the bench design to its quick environment, we needed to create an emblem for the city,” the studio says.
