Sprawling tufts of looped, wound, and crocheted yarn scale partitions and flooring in Vanessa Barragão’s elaborate, nature-inspired textiles. The Portuguese artist (beforehand) attracts inspiration from the textures of coral, rock swimming pools, botanicals, and the cosmos to compose expansive fiber items.
Every bit can take upwards of three weeks to finish, as Barragão and a staff of six studio assistants—together with her mom and sister, with further crocheted contributions from her grandmothers—collaboratively knot the yarn via each single gap within the jute canvas to create lush, biomorphic types.
For those who’re close to Lisbon, yow will discover Barragão’s work in Morphosis on the Museu das Artes de Sintra, Portugal, alongside ceramicist Catarina Nunes, which opens June 29 and runs via October 1. Discover extra on the artist’s web site and Instagram.
