From minimal outlines in black thread, empowering portraits of Black girls emerge in new large-scale textile items by Toronto-based artist Gio Swaby (beforehand). Vivid materials with an emphasis on florals dominate her new physique of labor titled I Will Blossom Anyway, on view now at Claire Oliver Gallery, emphasizing brightness, pleasure, and self-love. Centering on a variety of self-portraits, her current artworks replicate on private identification, embarking on an introspective journey towards acceptance and compassion.
Swaby’s curiosity in textiles ties her to a childhood surrounded by the supplies her mom typically utilized in her work as a seamstress.
