Lewes-based artist Seb Lester (beforehand) vacillates between the maximal and minimal in a brand new pair of aphoristic prints. Die-stamped in gold ink, the calligraphic works are research of the connection between medium and message, all filtered via elegantly gilded lettering.

“Carpe Diem,” the favored Latin maxim to “seize the day,” is the ornate of the pair and embedded with swords, flowers, and elaborate motifs. “I’ve drawn from many influences, together with Victorian Memorials, Medieval Cathedral Inscriptions, and the work of the best Writing Masters of the 18th century,” Lester says. “The letterforms are all extremely decorative and drawn particularly for the mission—heat Lombardic Capitals paired with a softened Textura lowercase.”

As a counterpart, the opposite print is extra austere, studying “Illegitimi Non Carborundum,” which roughly interprets to “don’t let the bastards grind you down.” Utilizing bespoke Roman Monumental Capitals depicted “as if lovingly carved and gilded in marble into a powerful historical monument,” the mock-Latin phrase is swish and refined, a distinction to the in any other case audacious message.

Each limited-edition prints can be found in Lester’s store, and you will discover extra of his calligraphy on Instagram.
