The residing and the useless coexist in vivid colour within the unbelievable tableaus of artist Lauren Marx (beforehand). From her St. Louis studio, Marx entangles predators and prey with wildlife in dense scenes rendered in a mixture of pen, watercolor, and coloured pencil. Snakes burst open to disclose feathered wings, an owl snacks on the maroon entrails of a rabbit, and a three-headed creature sprouts dried grass from its midsection. Straddling the road between the gorgeous and the brutally grotesque, the works intertwine myriad species and states of being.

Given the trauma of the Covid-19 pandemic and the more and more damaging results of the human-caused local weather disaster, Marx says the theme of lack of life has develop into extra poignant and profound. “I really feel the stress is even larger now after seeing dying develop into a part of our each day lives nonstop for years. It went from an informal remark to a persistent one,” she shares. “It’s actually very overwhelming for me.”

The artist interprets this grief into the mythological, rendering creatures like unicorns and dragons in vibrant hues. Fanciful by nature, these items twist lush florals and technicolor serpents across the horned beasts, with their deep purple intestines peeking via white fur. “I felt this urge to create vibrant items to be able to cheer myself,” she says. “Now, these topics play an enormous position in the place I need to take my work sooner or later.”

In November, Marx’s work will likely be included in a bunch exhibition at Haven Gallery in Lengthy Island. Peek into her course of on Instagram, and store prints and stickers on Etsy.
