CONTROL Gallery is happy to announce EXHIBITION 008: Thoughts Flowers, a brand new present from New York Metropolis-based multidisciplinary artist Othelo Gervacio. “I’ve at all times been drawn to issues and concepts that exude a darkish magnificence; from the life-fleeting imagery of wilting flowers to the origins of melodic, but heavy metallic music,” says Gervacio. “The cross-section of romance and tragedy has at all times been the coordinate at which a big portion of my pursuits lie, thus main me to create work evoking melancholic feelings.”

A mutated evolution of Gervacio’s signature type, Thoughts Flowers finds inspiration from seventeenth Century Dutch Grasp portray – which regularly portrayed flowers as most important topics, floating between metaphors of relationships and scientific realism – whereas crossing over with ‘70s psychedelic aesthetics and beliefs. The result’s a sequence of oil work and framed collages that summon feelings, amplified into an intense euphoric state.
Beginning with actual flowers that Gervacio collected, photographed, and graphically manipulated, the work that compose Thoughts Flowers immortalize these dwelling kinds in a psychedelic herbarium, capturing moments of expressive magnificence whereas concurrently evoking the profound significance of the ever-present digital affect in our lives and the warped perceptions that they imbue.
The shadow field items – known as “Bouquets” – include cynical or self-deprecating phrases encased with actual, cured preparations pertaining to the traditions of flower-giving, a wealthy and subjective vernacular used to suggest love, loss, sympathy, affection, forgiveness, and extra. It’s a silent language for pivotal moments within the human expertise.
The exhibition celebrates the cycle of life, development, transformation, and decay, reminding us of the ephemeral nature of existence and the urgency to precise it in its liveliest kinds.
Thoughts Flowers opens on July 29, 2023 from 11AM-6PM, with the present operating by August 26, 2023.
